February 2011 Newsletter for Blended and Step Families In this month’s Newsletter:
How to celebrate Valentine’s Day without upsetting anyone Well you made it through the holidays, and now it’s Valentine’s Day. You want to do some really nice things for your new spouse, but you’re afraid your kids will get upset. You want to do something special for your step kids, but you are afraid your biological kids will get upset. Well….you’re right! But, it’s O.K. You’re not going to make everyone happy all of the time- so it’s important to do what’s right and best for your blended family. You should take every opportunity to show everyone that you are a family- and family means that you give a little box of candy or a card (for example) to all of the kids- biological and step kids alike. Yes- your biological kids will get upset, but you are showing them that every child in this family is treated equally. As they see this consistent pattern, they will eventually settle down and trust that everyone is loved and cared for equally. This is also a great time to write a little note or letter to each of your kids, telling them how special they are to you and how much it means to you that they are your daughter or son. Now- what about your spouse? Being married means that you treat your spouse special, and that he or she is a priority in your life. You need to plan something really special for Valentine’s Day. It might be the weekend after, or planned a different day, but you still need to make special arrangements to show your love for your spouse. Your kids will be jealous of this special treatment, and that’s O.K. too! Your spouse should be in the center of the family and the center of the marriage. If you don’t keep this marriage a priority, you will head for divorce again. If you don’t make this marriage a priority- your kids will never understand how to have a healthy marriage. The adults are in charge of your blended family home- not the kids. Show them that these two adults love, appreciate and respect each other by spending some couple time with each other for Valentine’s Day. Contest for those with new babies! Did you recent have a baby in your blended or stepfamily? Or, is there a baby due to arrive in your family in the next few months? If so, you may want to participate in our Giveaway this month for a free Baby Codes book, by Kevin Mills. Baby Codes is 101 winning combinations to help your baby sleep- which means you get to sleep!
